Mt Elgon is a huge volcano with the largest crater of the major peaks in Africa- with one of the largest calderas in the world. Bordering Uganda and Kenya, this mountain boasts milder climate and is less busy than Kilimanjaro or Ruwenzori thus making it an ideal mountain for those who prefer a quieter trek. The mountain is filled with cliffs, caves, gorges and waterfalls and the views stretch all the way to the plains of Uganda.
The lower slopes of the mountain are covered in tropical montane forest and bamboo. Above 3000m the forest fades into heath and Afro-alpine moorland, which covers the extensive caldera and a collapsed 40 sq km crater. You'll find rare plant species and duikers bounding through the grass, as well as the lammergeier vultures overhead. There is also loads of bird life including the rare Jackson's francolin.

ROUTES
SASAThe Sasa route is the original route to the Wagagai peak (4, 321 m) on the Ugandan side, and is still the busiest route starting at Budarari. It is a 3 to 4 day round trip with an ascent of 1650m on the first day. It is possible to drive up to the first 5km to Bumasolo to reach the forest . Once you enter the forest, you reach Mundangi cliffs where you will scale by ladders and then the rest of the climb is bamboo forest. The second day is an easier walk to Wagagai campsite. The summit day is approximately four hours.
SIPIThe Sipi route begins in Kapkwai and is a popular return route allowing you to relax and rest at Sipir Falls following the summit ascent. It can be a 4 to 7 day expedition, with options to descend the easier Sasa route. The first day is spent camping in the Tutum Cave, with a small waterfall over it's entrance.
PISAStarting at the village of Kapkwata, the Pisa Route has a gentler ascent than the steeper Sipi and is known as the best wildlife watching route as it doesn't pass through the thick bamboo forest and offers a long stretch through the moorland of the caldera. It is approximately a 6 day trek descending through the Sasa route or 7 days if descending through the Sipi route.
SUAMThe Suam route, is a rarely used route that is approximately a 5 day trek staring at a higher elevation than the Sasa route. It climbs through the Suam Gorge along the Kenyan border.
