Mount Meru is a stratovolcano situated east of the Great Rift Valley and about 40 km southwest of Mount Kilimanjaro in Northern Tanzania's Arusha National Park. It is considered an active volcano and also the fourth highest mountain in all of Africa. Arusha National Park provides certificates for climbers who summit the Little Meru sub-peak (3820m) or Mount Meru summit (Socialist peak, 4565m). The 14km/19 km Momella Route is the only official route to the summit today and takes between 4-5 days on the Momella Route.
Momella RouteThe Momella route begins at Momella park Gate and can take one of two tracks to Miriakamba Hut, either a shorter 5 km or a longer 10km route that allows one to see more wildlife and scenery including waterfalls and old huts. The first day of the trek follows the trails through the forest and a small brook towards the crater floor. The route passes the plain savannah of the Arusha National Park with lots of buffalo and some giraffes, before it climbs steeply up to Miriakamba Hut.
The second day, from the Miriakamba Hut it is a 4 km trail through the forest up to the Saddle Hut. The first section of the route from Miriakamba Hut to Mgongo Wa Tembo, a favorite lunch stop, is the most beautiful part of this trek. A wooden staircase helps to manage the steep climb through the exotic flora with strange myth trees and flowers. On the third day, there is 5km ascent to the summit through the barren Rhino Point, with amazing views of the summit and the inner crater walls. At Rhino Point there is a pile of bones in the center of the clearing and henceforth there are arrows painted on the rock leading to the summit. |
