HELL'S GATE

Named for the intense geothermal activity within its boundaries, Hell's Gate National Park is park surrounded bytowering cliffs, water-gouged gorges, stark rock towers, scrub clad volcanoes and belching plumes of geothermal steam make it one of the most atmospheric Parks in Africa. It provides an excellent opportunity for climbing for all levels of climbers, in the beauty and serenity of a national park. Climb while watching herds of zebra, warthogs and buffalos below. It is also an an ideal a day trip or camping trip from Nairobi where, in addition to the bio-diversity, visitors can also enjoy mountain biking, hiking in the gorge and the natural hot pool.

For beginner to experienced climber, Hell's Gate has something for everyone. The Entrance Wall has some perfectly clean splitters- the rock is hard slate and the cracks vary in size from thin fingers to hands to off-width, with many lines next to each other, most with an anchor on top. Further down, is the Main Wall, with many multi-pitch climbs of similar quality of rock, but not as clean and with slightly challenging route-finding. Moreover, Fischers Tower and Central Tower offer single and two-pitch climbs, great for beginners and experienced climbers, using various routes, topping out to amazing panoramic views! LUKENYA RIDGE

Lukenya ridge is an outcrop of basement gneiss rising as an island through the phonolite lava of the Kapiti plains. Gneiss is composed of quartz, alkali-felspar and mica, arranged in parallel layers. It is a prominent ridge 24 miles from Nairobi on the Mombasa road.

​The crags, which boast over 260 climbs, are on the east side of the ridge, facing away from Nairobi. The eastern side of the ridge is property of the Mountain Club of Kenya (MCK) and access is open to club members and their guests. A few crags are outside the MCK boundary, specifically on the northern end of the ridge, and permission to climb on these must be sought from the owner.The climbing is characterised by slabs and walls with small holds. The rock is generally sound though flakes should be tested before use and care should be taken with shallow rooted trees and bushes, the latter especially for anchoring.
