Alkarim (Alku) and Jadie, a passionate and energetic partnership in business and in life, share a love for the outdoors!
They met in Western Kenya, on one of Alku's overland truck safaris and instantly clicked in their shared love and respect for nature and their passion for adventure travel. Routes & Boots was founded from their shared values and beliefs in the transformative power of outdoor adventure for people from all walks of life.

Alkarim, a Kenyan with a deep connection to the East African wilderness, has spent many years of his life scaling many rocks and mountains in East Africa, Canada and South America, guiding safaris, and sharing his love for the continent with others. He has over 15 years of hands-on experience leading teams up various mountains, extensive experience in developing and facilitating youth outdoor education programs, team building and wellness programs, and managing cause-related fundraiser multi-day expeditions. He also has certifications with the Outward-Bound Mountain School in youth outdoor leadership development, minimum impact bushcraft, campcraft, high altitude mountaineering and experiential trainings in wilderness first aid, technical rock climbing, and search & rescue.
Alku also has over 15 years of broad working experience in the not-for-profit sector, in areas of board governance advisory, strategic planning and facilitation, and program & operational management in over 20 countries in Africa, Europe and Canada.
Jadie McDonnell, B.A, M.A., 300 RYT, Trauma-Informed Yoga Instructor, Co-founder, Routes & Boots
Jadie, originally from a small town in Northern Ontario, Canada, had spent much of her childhood outdoors, fishing, trekking, skiing, kayaking and canoeing. With an M.A in Adult Education and Community Development and Comparative, International, Development Education, she also brought her extensive experience in education, health promotion, adult education and community development to Routes and Boots.
Jadie is also a certified 300 level trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness instructor. She has over 12 years practicing and teaching vinyasa, hatha, yin and restore yoga, meditation, mindfulness and breathing exercises. She also runs a variety of retreats across East Africa. She is an avid mountaineer, having climbed many mountains and volcanoes in Kenya, Japan, Canada, Peru, Bolivia and Indonesia.
